I had a MAJOR problem with this film from the very first scene . Gloria is a dead ringer for Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie . She looked not so bad without her big glasses and make-up....but for half of the film I expected her to rip a wig off and reveal she was a man ! Gloria totally dominates the film (I cant think of a scene where she isn't in shot)and she was deserving of all the favourable reviews . However ,the tale of a middle aged woman searching for love in this way was a little too far fetched for me....and her "last chance" with a man who looked old enough to be her grand-father just didn't sit right . I was also a little uncomfortable with the fairly graphic sex scenes , which I thought were not very tasteful , as opposed to, for instance, the scenes in Blue is the Warmest Colour (which I saw the night before)

Scott Pilgrim plays in a band which aspires to success. Teenager problems (find yourself, get real, etc.) might not give anything to people considering themselves mayor adults, but consider this is a movie built on arcade video gaming motifs, I don't think it concerns mayor adults at all in the first place. I for one did not necessarily long for dark moral drama in this particular movie at all, I think the story was just about right for this movie, but you decide, if this is childish watch Haneke. Now for the rest: Surprisingly, Scott Pilgrim features the best martial arts scenes in years. Every fight is choreographed and executed in the most awesome ways and the fact that it's not Jet Lee pulling off these moves makes it even more fun to watch. And you get the fights absolutely frequently which is really, really satisfying. The editing is incredibly skillful as probably the most crucial element that makes this work. It gives the movie an incredible rhythm, reaching new levels of dynamism and the use of CGI and the visual design is plain fantastic. The amount of creativity put into this part is mind- blowing, resulting genuine and most original style. The cast is cool and I don't think anyone should look for academy material here. I liked these kids and they suit the movie. So, all together I found Scott Pilgrim being one of the most original, exciting and fun productions I've seen in my life. As a huge fan of things like fighting games, comics, or martial arts anime I felt satisfied to a point of screaming 'awesome' out loud after 30 minutes into the movie. Though people who never played Street Fighter or kept crossing fingers for Goku and friends yelling 'kamehameha' as evil bosses get pulverized by energy beams might not really get what Scott Pilgrim is about, it's very hard to deny the originality featured and the creative and professional qualities of the way it's executed. Fantastic! 8/10

Saw this movie last night World Premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival. First, let me tell you this festival is great, awesome films and fun fun destination. The movie chronicles the life of a under-spoken, nerdy kid who strives to be that which is the opposite - assertive, top of the pack leader. At work, he is constantly undermined by a college who takes credit for his work and is the all around a-hole that people love to hate. On a team building trip, lead by the non other than Jean-Claude Van Damme (hilariously mocking himself and many other things) as the wilderness leader on this isolated island. Adam Brody does a great job with the funny, quick hitting humor, playing off the over-the-top always funny nemesis played by Rob Huebel. The thing is, going into this movie and letting yourself be entertained, its a huge success with funny side characters, plays on other movies and books that make you say aha yeah! It does not get to that stupidity point where you might think such a comedy could fall into, and it keeps things clever, while still entertaining greatly in a plot which has all the common points and you can predict where its going to go. Although you may see the underlying basics, you are nevertheless entertained and laughing in your seat. Well done, hope this movie has lots of success.

I would like to open with one word; Wow. I had been wanting to watch this movie since I had seen the first trailer. After being invited to an advanced showing I got very excited. The movie was outstanding. The cinematography was perfect and the character development was extraordinary. The film was very well paced and at no point did i believe the film was too short or that I felt rushed during the movie. It has its action moments and satire, but overall it is a very happy film. I will most likely see the film in the future again because this is up there with Forrest Gump and Django Unchained as a near perfect movie.

The last few Scorsese pics left me a little disappointed. I had begun to think Marty had become a 'gun for hire' and that his brilliance may have been spent (his earlier works were some of the best movies ever made). I attended a screening of The Wolf of Wall Street this evening, and was expecting to be unimpressed. I am happy to say I was completely blown away. This pic is Marty at his best. I laughed, I cringed, I related (with fond memories as well as a bit of guilt) and I TOTALLY believed every unbelievable moment. A good book, a great screenplay and a delightful cast were formed and molded into what I believe should get Scorsese a best director Oscar, and likely a Best Picture Award for the movie. Leo DiCaprio has grown into a versatile actor and his creation of this super hero dirtbag's roller coaster ride in this crazy (true) story is really honest and delightfully entertaining. Jonah Hill pulled out all the stops too and this is definitely his best work. Thank you Mr. Scorsese for delivering the goods so brilliantly!

I saw this at the Hamptons International Film Festival as the Spotlight film and it was one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is so relatable, even if you don't suffer from the same afflictions as the main characters, and its implications are so far-reaching that everyone, I believe, can learn a little something from Pat and Tiffany. The story sends such wonderful messages about finding the "silver lining" and is uplifting, even in the seemingly most dire circumstances. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper are phenomenal, and I found myself really attached to their characters. This is a must see for everyone! And I will be seeing it again when it hits theaters in November.

When Beverly vanishes, Violet's sister Mattie Fae Aiken (Margo Martindale) and her husband Charlie (Chris Cooper) arrive to console the sickly woman. They're joined by Violet's daughter Barbara (Julia Roberts), her husband Bill (Ewan McGregor), and their 14 year-old daughter Jean (Abigail Breslin), all from Colorado, at the Weston's large Oklahoma house. Violet's other daughter Ivy (Julianne Nicholson), who seems to quietly blend in with the background, harboring a secret romantic interest and contempt for being the only one to stay close (and therefore responsible) to her mother, is also present. Once all the Weston women are in a single location, they can't help but to argue. Violet's moodiness, perhaps influenced by the plenitude of medication, encourages gossip and bitter insults. When the police find the body of Beverly, having drowned himself out on his boat, the third daughter Karen (Juliette Lewis) and her fiancé Steve (Dermot Mulroney) drive into town (in his showy red Ferrari) from Florida, to attend the funeral. Charlie's timid son, "Little" Charles (Benedict Cumberbatch), broken up about missing the ceremony, meets the assemblage afterwards. As the extended family sets the table and prepares a feast, socializing turns acerbic, a blessing lacks sincerity, and inner feelings are incautiously unleashed upon an ill-prepared congregation of uncomfortable onlookers, led by the ranting, irritated Violet. Writer Tracy Letts adapts his own Pulitzer Prize-winning play for the big screen – and it definitely feels like just that took place. The sets are few, the scope is limited, and the dialogue is abundant. This content is the type best observed via a stage show, as it doesn't translate to theatrical material with any vibrancy and the edited footage reveals the pacing constraints of verbiage-heavy exchanges in a single room. While inundated with abrasive language and hateful remarks, there's a darkly comic vibe running through the dour, antagonistic raving. A steady escalation of shouting and verbal aggressions turns into physical grappling and emotionally unraveling revelations for all.

I saw Grudge Match in an early screening and I (as most of the audience) had so much fun. This is a light hearted, nostalgic film with lots of great jokes and a fantastic cast. Kevin Hart delivers, he fits just perfectly in his role. Alan Arkin steals the show in this one. He is so damn funny with his great one liners and his impressively cool acting. It is also great to see the beautiful Kim Basinger on the big screen again. De Niro and Stallone look 20 years younger than their real age when fighting in the ring, well choreographed fight scenes by the way. The physics of both Stallone and De Niro is just impressive. Most 30 year old would be more than happy to have a body like these two old-timers. There are some Rocky references in the film, and they are classy ones. I find this to be the perfect film for the Christmas Days to have a great time at the movies. It certainly is not made to please the critics, it is made to entertain the audience and create a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. And without any doubt, the film delivers! Can't wait to see it with some friends on Christmas Day...

Give it up, if you didn't like Chucky before, you are absolutely going to hate Seed of Chucky. I read many negative reviews prior to watching this movie and was quite ready for a major disappointment. However, it did not happen. In my opinion, the movie is the crown of the entire series, an ode to Chucky, the star of popular culture. Look how he refuses to become human ...superb! For a lover of camp, gory flicks, horror and parody, there are so many delightful moments in the movie. However, it is not horror as such,nor any other particular genre for that matter. Chucky is not even the main star of the movie! I have already declared myself as a fan, and maybe my view is not entirely unbiased.

I never write reviews but after seeing how the film has been reviewed as mediocre, I thought I ought to, but I'll keep it short and sweet. To be blatantly honest, I saw the film mainly because Dylan O'Brien was in it. However,now that I've seen it, I would watch it again even if Dylan O'Brien weren't in it. It was humorous and I could connect with the nerd references in the film which I found to be very funny. More than it was funny, it was refreshing. The film felt modern and was spot on about society and how it works today. The settings themselves will have you in awe at just how cool they are. All the characters were lovable as well and strayed from what I had first expected in a good way. I mean, it was impossible to not connect with them, if not at least one. The film contained that basic underdog story line but the way they executed this story line was different and I appreciated it. This isn't a film that has the biggest climax or heartfelt ending, but it will keep you smiling the entire time. A very entertaining movie through and through.

Director-writer David E Talbert provided a creatively idle rom-com starring Paula Patton (Montana Moore); as a flight attendant who under the pressure of her mother (Jennifer Lawrence) and the wedding engagement of her younger sister (Lauren London) somehow finds herself in a position where she has to locate and bring a fiancé to her sister's rehearsal dinner in thirty days. In doing so, she uses her friends to set up an arguably illegal "spy network" to find out which of her ex- boyfriends are taking which flights- so she can manipulate herself aboard and hopefully start again with these men. She wears the long, straight rom-com hair of ignorance with the smile of innocence which I like to call a ritual of rom-com. The story was naturally predictable adhering to every single rom-com textbook story model and so heavily resting on weak humour. Alongside the contemporary traditional female friend and gay male friend duo (similar to Devil's Wear Prada) it's one large equation for mediocre...if that. I'm not particularly familiar with Talbert and this is the first film I've seen of his, regardless, in this film it's strongly indicative that he's chosen quantity over quality.

I have watched and critiqued my fair share of movies and cannot find any reason that this movie is below a 7.5. First, I do not rate comedies above 7.5 because they do not have the "wow" factor that most dramas or suspenseful films have. I will say, Act Like A Woman, Think Like A Man, was 2 hr and 10 minutes long and I wish it were longer; I enjoyed it that much. The cast was an excellent choice and each character played their role perfectly. It was a great combination of comedy, drama, and romance. I would highly recommend seeing this movie. And again, I do not rate comedies above 7.5 so this movie gets my highest rating! If you see it, I promise you won't be disappointed. Shame on STARZ for rating it 2.5 stars. Give it four stars!

This is a straight up comedy and full of great one-liners. Saw Last Vegas as a free pre-screening (full house with applause at the end)this evening and originally had just planned to wait for the DVD. Thought that it would be another half baked comedy. I was wrong. It's definitely worth the price of your large drink and tub of popcorn. There is a message to this movie: life your life to the fullest and don't be afraid to get old. Of course, it's easy when your those four great actors. Freeman, Douglas, Kline, and De Niro give one of the best ensemble performances in a movie that I've seen in a while. Everyone plays well against each other. These guys must have enjoyed working together, because it shows. Good casting and chemistry. Decent story and writing; some predictable moments that are elevated to another level are pulled of because some things done or said that were surprising. You'll know when you see it. Mary Steenburgen is wonderful. Still a lovely woman and her character adds a dose of "heart" when it's needed. A terrific performance from her as well. Just the right kind of singing voice for the part. Pacing was perfect. I didn't feel like I'd been siting in a cinema for very long. Score was well done (good job, Mark Mothersbaugh!)and enjoyed the cinematography, too. Big moments were spectacular and the little moments intimate.

This is probably one of the best movies I've seen. Okay, disagree with me, but hear me out first. I've never understood the desire for children. I don't know why people have kids. And nobody, not even my own parents, have been able to explain to me why. But this film inspired me to become a father one day. I laughed. It brought me tears three times. I walked away from that movie feeling satisfied, warm, and with a whole new outlook on life. Don't go into this movie expecting the comedy or the drama or the story of the year, because you're not going to get that. What you are going to get is an enjoyable film that will make you smile. And that's truly all that matters. This film is full of love and what it means, and I left loving this film and loving and understanding the desire to have children.

Walt Disney Pictures' celebrated reputation is often entwined with its impressive history of animated musicals: mention "The Little Mermaid", "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King", all Oscar-winning films with extraordinary songs that have lingered as quintessential childhood memories in the minds of many. It's almost a return to full form this time with 2013's holiday animated feature "Frozen", penned and co-directed by Jennifer Lee (co-writer of "Wreck-It Ralph") alongside Chris Buck ("Surf's Up"). Following the trend of last year's Scottish fairy tale "Brave", where a feisty flame- haired princess rebels against family pressure and social expectations in order to live life on her own terms, "Frozen" is adapted from Hans Christian Anderson's "The Snow Queen". It features a pair of princesses from the fictional country of Arrendale who are, rather expectedly, as different as night and day: Coolly reserved and classically beautiful, Elsa (Idina Menzel, Broadway stalwart and occasional "Glee" guest star) is born with the seemingly limitless gift of being able to manipulate ice and snow, able to produce it with a wave of her hand, while her little sister Anna (Kristen Bell) is ordinary but naturally vivacious and plucky. A childhood accident that leaves Anna aesthetically scarred with a lock of blond hair in her auburn locks convinces Elsa that her powers must be hidden in order to prevent further harm. Yet the more the truth is concealed, the less control she has. Elsa withdraws both emotionally and physically, alienating Anna and creating in her both a strong independence and a yearning for love and attention. I saw 12 Years a Slave the same day (just half-an-hour before) and I'll tell you I NEEDED The Best Man Holiday after seeing 12 Years a Slave! :-) Anyway, the previews don't give away any of the story line, which was marvelously written and performed. This story was deeply moving and the transitions and transformations of some of the characters was very endearing. The way the friendships move in and out in natural progression was, dare I say, realistic in nature. The chemistry between Mia (Monica) and Lance (Morris) has always come off as very natural and so naturally believable. And I won't give away the plot except to say the previews don't nearly give it away, THANKFULLY. GO SEE IT! I'm going to see it again. It was that good!

A mafia boss and his family are relocated to a sleepy town in France under the witness protection program after snitching on the mob. Despite the best efforts of CIA Agent Stansfield (Tommy Lee Jones) to keep them in line, Fred Manzoni (Robert De Niro), his wife Maggie (Michelle Pfeiffer) and their children Belle (Dianna Agron) and Warren (John D'Leo) can't help but revert to old habits and blow their cover by handling their problems the "family" way, enabling their former mafia cronies to track them down. Chaos ensues as old scores are settled in the unlikeliest of settings in this darkly funny film by Luc Besson (Taken, Transporter).

"Like Al Capone said, asking polite with a gun in your hand is better than asking polite with nothing." Giovanni Family values in The Family are not your father's values unless, like me, your grandfather ran a numbers business in the basement of his barbershop. All of Kodak Park enjoyed that true color. The Giovanni Manzoni/Fred Blake (Robert De Niro) family has a paterfamilias who is a notorious Mafia don in the FBI witness protection plan. (De Niro as a mobster is the fall's most unimaginative casting but he's funny.) His values are ratting on his fellow Mafiosi to save his legal hide, forcing him to hide with a $20 million reward dogging him. The family's love for each other is unconditional and treats challenges with a baseball bat rather than diplomacy. If a Frenchman disrespects Americans, he might find his supermarket in flames. If this sounds like a story to turn the nuns' heads completely around, don't worry; it's ultra "black comedy," equal parts Italian-American gangster satire and laughable domestic shenanigans. That midway in the film Fred gets to speak on the merits of GoodFellas before a French crowd in Normandy is one of the nice meta-critical-comedic turns followed by carnage we've come to expect from Mob films. It's pretty much territory owned by Scorsese and De Niro. Additionally, the use of the "f" word has never been so deftly played in a comedy. Besides the joy of seeing De Niro have a good time with the many tough characters he has played in his career, you get to see Tommy Lee Jones play a gruff FBI agent, Robert Stansfield, who can trade barbs with his charge, Fred, who has such a propensity for violence (he beats up the only plumber within 20 miles of town) that Fred is a full time job for Robert. If Jones's face can't scare Fred into being a good boy, then the threat of losing witness protection does the trick.

My husband accompanied me, but warned me that he would not stay if it didn't interest him after 15 minutes. He stayed, and gave me the summary, CHICK FLICK FOR MEN. It's a fantasy because it deals with living in the present and the past at the same time. It's a romance because it's about young love, and love expressed between two people who have been married for a very long time and still feel that spark that brought them together. It's a family film about siblings loving one another so much that one of them might just jeopardize his future to save his sister's life. It's a cautionary tale for those who practice habits that could sicken them or get them killed. It's about life, and truly living one's life even when faced with the prospect of death. The acting is solid, and Rachel McAdams is lovely and inspiring. The rest of the actors are amazing as well, and you want to believe that it is all real. But the story itself can be so unbelievable. Just go with it. It's like a really high calorie dessert that tastes so good you don't care if you gain five pounds. I enjoyed ABOUT TIME immensely, and I could watch it again and again.
